Happy Hour Fundraises to End Alzheimer’s
By Camp Bow Wow
Chances are you or someone you know has lost a loved one to Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in three seniors dies from it or another dementia, and more than 6 million live with the disease in America alone. Like so many of you, David Cohn and his colleagues at Perspective Wealth of Steward Partners have personally experienced a relative’s struggle. David also saw firsthand how some of the newer medicines slowed the progression of his father’s symptoms so that he never completely lost recognition of his family, a great gift.
Others are not so fortunate. David’s business partner Leah Schwarz’s mother-in-law declined until she no longer knew her children, which was heartbreaking. Alzheimer’s literally “robs somebody of who they are,” David said.
Two years ago, David and his group of financial advisors decided they wanted to join the fight against the disease in tribute to their loved ones. The Alzheimer’s Association holds an annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s in more than 600 communities across the country to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
But the Perspective Wealth of Steward Partners’ team dreamed bigger. In 2021 they developed a happy hour event prior to the walk to jumpstart fundraising. The first year they raised $20,000, all of which went directly to the Alzheimer’s Association, a total they hope to increase this year. Their team now has become one of the top San Antonio corporate donors to the Alzheimer Association’s local chapter, and one of the partners, Zach McCown, even joined the Association’s board of directors.
This year, their kickoff happy hour will be held Oct. 17 from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Alamo Beer Garden Co., located at 202 Lamar Street. The downtown San Antonio venue not far from the Alamodome will be open only to eventgoers at that time. Local classic rock band Southbound 35 will provide live music, and patrons will enjoy raffles, prizes, food catered by Rudy’s Texas Bar-B-Q, and, as you’d expect at a beer garden, Alamo Beer’s own craft brew. Notable silent auction items include a week at the Divi Little Bay Beach Resort in St. Martin or a week in Port Aransas at Coral Cay. For an in-town experience – bid on four tickets to a Jazz on the Water concert.
