Chan will host District 9 budget hearing Thursday

Councilwoman Elisa Chan
District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan and City staff will host a community budget hearing at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at the Parman Public Library, 20735 Wilderness Oak.

According to Chan, the proposed FY 2012 budget is balanced and would allow for $21 million in savings to carry over to the 2013 budget.  The City's budgeted financial reserves would be maintained at nine percent and there are no proposed tax increases.

"The FY 2012 proposed budget would forego $30.5 million in property tax revenue from senior and disabled homestead exemptions and frozen city tax payments. This illustrates our continued commitment to providing tax relief to those who have already given so much to our community,” Chan explains in an emailed newsletter to constituents.

The proposed budget also calls for additional police officers and firefighters and $1.6 million in public library enhancements, with $250,000 going towards books.  The proposed budget would also allot $4 million towards the City’s economic development efforts.

On the downside, the FY 2012 budget also calls for $24 million in reductions and the elimination of nearly 200 jobs. All impacted employees, however, will fill existing vacancies in other departments.   More information on the City’s FY 2012 budget may be found at http://www.ci.sat.tx.us/budget/.

A final public budget hearing will be held in the Council Chambers at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31. The City Council is expected to adopt the budget on Thursday, Sept. 15. The new fiscal year will begin Oct. 1.
