Larson passes first hurdle in race for Corte's seat

Tuesday’s primary election had a less than stellar turnout, with only 12.47 percent of the 887,915 registered voters in Bexar County casting a ballot. With nearly 84 percent of the vote, former Bexar County commissioner and city councilman Lyle Larson easily defeated opponent Denise Barnhill in his race for the District 122 state representatives seat vacated by Frank Corte. Larson will go up against lone Democratic candidate Masarrat Ali of Rogers Ranch in the general election.
In the race for governor, Rick Perry surpassed the first hurdle to keep his job, beating out Republican opponants Kay Bailey Hutchison and Debra Medina with 52.18 percent of the vote. On the Democratic ticket, Bill White defeated the six other candidates vying for the governor’s seat with more than 76 percent of the vote. White and Perry will now face-off in the general election.
Within the 23rd Congressional District, Republicans Francisco “Quico” Canseco and Will Hurd will continue their race for U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez’ seat in the April 13 run-off election. While Rodriguez easily defeated his Democratic opponent, Miguel Ortiz, with more than 87 percent of the vote.
