Nine months after being sworn into office, District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan held her first town hall meeting to relay her accomplishments to date and plans for the future. Thursday’s sparsely-attended meeting at Parkhills Baptist Church also included presentations by SAWS President Robert Puente, as well as representatives from BexarMet and the Metropolitan Planning Organization.
Chan’s 30-minute speech included the following points:
· The City Council was successful in passing a balanced budget despite an $11 million shortfall.
· The new Parman Public Library will open in early 2011 near Blanco Road and Wilderness Oak. Chan has secured $275,000 for library books and still hopes to build another library within District 9.
· In the past nine months, Chan has attended 30 HOA meetings and 25 neighborhood-related meetings. Her office has responded to more than 20,000 e-mails and 45,000 phone calls. “I put a lot of emphasis on serving our constituents,” she said.
· Approximately $200,000 from the Neighborhood Access Mobility Program will fund construction of speed bumps on seven designated streets in District 9 this year, including Knights Cross near Ashmont.
· With District 9 reporting the highest number of property crimes in the city, Chan continues to look for ways to increase public safety. She wants to increase the number of SAFFE officers in the district and is looking into whether empty police cars can be parked in certain areas to help deter criminals. “We do pay our share of taxes,” she said. “And we do have needs that need to be serviced.”
· Chan discussed San Antonio’s presence at the 2010 World Expo, which will be held in Shanghai, China May 1-Oct. 31. “We are really trying to make this a trip that will open doors,” Chan said, adding that the expo is an opportunity to increase San Antonio’s international profile and attract businesses that will, in turn, bring jobs and additional revenue to our city.
· Groundbreaking for the Hwy 281 Superstreet project will be held March 11. Construction is expected to begin in April and be completed by the fall.
