Encino Park students raise money, chuck pies

Encino Park staffers get pied

In February, Encino Park Elementary School students participated in two large charity events and raised more than $9,000. Sponsored by physical education coaches Don Greenwood and Marian Peters, the first event, Jump Rope for Heart, raised $7,745 for the American Heart Association.  The second, a 70s-themed dance, raised $1,300 for the Leukemia Society.

Top fundraisers for the Jump Rope event were Taylor Slaughter, who raised $675, and Megan Copeland, who raised $214.  As an extra incentive, all students who raised more than $100 for the American Heart Association were given a rare opportunity to throw pies at the two coaches, as well as Principal Colleen Bohrmann, Assistant Principal Audrey Garcia and SAPD Officer Frank San Miguel.  A total of 27 students earned this right.

The fundraiser dance, titled Pennies for Patients Prom, was sponsored by the Student Senate and held within the Encino Park Elementary School cafeteria.  Participating students donned mini-skirts, polyester pants and go-go boots while grooving to the beats of the 1970s.

"Encino Park students are proud to be giving back to the community and to those in need," said Bohrmann.
