Last week workers began constructing a left turn lane on the eastbound side of Huebner Road across from The Oaks of Sonterra subdivision. A first step in a recent push to improve traffic flow in this community, the turn lane is a joint project between the city of San Antonio and Stone Oak’s Property Owners Association.
According to POA manager Buz Buckley, Stone Oak’s advisory council requested this turn lane receive top priority due to the imminent danger posed by the area’s low visibility and high volume of traffic. Along with the turn lane, an acceleration lane is also being constructed on the eastbound side of Huebner Road at The Oaks entrance. A left turn lane on the westbound side of Huebner Road -- for traffic heading into the Midlands at Sonterra development -- already exists.
Buckley says both the city and Stone Oak POA will pay for the new turn lane, estimated at $180,000. Additional turn lanes throughout Stone Oak are possible, added Buckley, although noting future projects are dependent on the support of the city.
