Geeks Who Drink to invade Stone Oak pub

Lion and Rose British Pub

Brace yourselves people.  The Colorado-based phenomenon Geeks Who Drink will be staggering into Texas next month, making their anticipated Aug. 5 debut at the Lion and Rose British Pub on Sonterra Boulevard.  A competitive quiz game, Geeks Who Drink is designed to stump, entertain and draw crowds of self-proclaimed know-it-alls on an otherwise slow weeknight at neighborhood bars.

Of course, calling this merely pub trivia is, as the Geeks would say, like comparing grandma’s home cooking to The Sizzler. Skewed towards pop culture, the two-hour game includes eight rounds of eight questions (What accessory did Hasbro remove from Mr. Potatohead in 1987?) played in teams of up to six people.  Two rounds consist of audio questions, including a themed “name that tune” (Top 40 songs butchered by David Hasslehoff).  Questions are read aloud by the Quizmaster, who is often a local actor or stand-up comedian.

“We didn’t invent the pub quiz, but we definitely put a new spin on it,” says Geeks’ founder John Dicker, noting that even those who never score well still play every week.  “Even if they don’t win, they’re entertained by the questions.  We try to make it interesting and entertaining.”

Hardly reminiscent of yesteryear’s Trivia Pursuit, the Geeks Who Drink games are original every night and written by a team of more than a dozen writers.  Questions can include everything from “What is the most shoplifted book in America?” to “Name the two Muppets who heckle the show from the balcony.”

Along with bragging rights, winners typically take home bar gift certificates and those who score a bonus e-mail question are awarded a treasured gag prize, such as inflatable toast, oversized pencil or squirt camera.  Photos of winning teams are also posted on a highly interactive Geeks Who Drink website, which allows players to blog and contest answers they believe to be wrong.

“Of course, we’re always right,” says Dicker, who employs a team of fact-checkers.  “We take being correct very seriously.”

Started in February of 2006, Geeks Who Drink is currently played every week in roughly 35 bars across Colorado and New Mexico.  Texas is the next state they hope to conquer and the Aug. 5 game at the Lion and Rose will be their premier performance.  Still, Dicker has few worries about entering the Lone Star state.

“We do plenty of rounds about live ammo,” he jokes.

The Geeks Who Drink trivia game will begin at 8 p.m. every Tuesday, beginning Aug. 5.  The Lion and Rose is located at 700 E. Sonterra Blvd.  For more information visit http://geekswhodrink.com or http://thelionandrose.com.
