Small Kids with a Big Heart, Lopez Middle School makes history

Tears were filling Andrea Hopkins eyes this morning as she was watching her National Junior Honor Society students gather up for a historic moment at Lopez Middle School. Mrs. Kramer's 6th grade class made history this past spring by raising over $13,000 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This morning, the class was presenting a check to the schools director of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

NEISD recognized at HEB Awards reception

Four NEISD educators were recognized as state finalists during the H-E-B Excellence in Education awards ceremony on May 3 in Austin. An NEISD elementary school was also honored and selected to receive a $15,000 healthy campus grant.

The ceremony brought nominees together from across the state, as H-E-B made its announcement of its top winners in this education awards program for 2013.

North Central Baptist Hospital Joint Club now available

North Central Baptist Hospital is making sure you are not alone when it comes to getting a hip or knee replacement. The Joint Club is now up and running and is for all patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.

The club provides patients a chance to meet others who are also about to undergo the procedure. Those who join the Joint Club will be going through pre surgical educational classes and then post-op rehab exercises. Studies show that going through the process with others helps patients recover faster.

Loop 1604 main lane closures scheduled May 6- May 10

ROAD

The Texas Department of Transportation will shut down main lane traffic on Loop 1604 at Vance Jackson on the northwest side of town nightly according to a press release. The closure will happen May 6 through May 10 and will cause major delays for overnight traffic in the area. The closure will allow bridge builders with Austin Bridge Company set support beams across the main lanes of Loop 1604 to form a bridge connecting Vance Jackson with The Rim Shopping Center.

Johnson's Vicellio Recipient of Humanities Award

Take a look at Johnson High School's Adrian Viccellio's district teacher website and it's easy to tell that he has a passion for culture and world history. Photos of Viccellio standing by the Great Wall of China and in front of the London Bridge give it away.

This passion, along with his involvement with Humanities Texas, has made him the recipient of the 2013 James F. Veninga Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award. During the 2013-2014 school year, Viccellio will receive a check for $5,000 in recognition of his achievements.

River City Run is a non-competitive running tour of the downtown San Antonio area. It has 16 different stops and is a perfect way for runners of all running levels to experience all that San Antonio has to offer.

May 3 (Friday night): - Loop 1604 eastbound main lanes from Redland to Gold Canyon will be closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Crews will patch concrete and clean up around the bridges.

 

May 4 (Saturday morning to Sunday morning): - Loop 1604 westbound main lanes from Gold Canyon to Redland will be closed from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m. Crews will patch concrete and clean up around the bridges.

- Loop 1604 eastbound frontage road right lane at Sigma will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Crews will be hauling material.
