As San Antonio’s weather gets closer to “Texas Winter” time and the temperatures begin to drop, San Antonio Fire Department would like everyone to keep the following safety tips in mind.
Projections released yesterday reveal that there will be an increased number of Americans traveling compared to last year. AAA estimates that 43.6 million Americans will drive or hop on a plane to reach their Thanksgiving destinations. Although this number shows an increase of .07 percent from last year, almost 90 percent of these travelers will choose to drive instead of fly. The average American will endure a 588 mile trip this season which is down from 706 miles.
Even though the 281/1604 direct connectors opened yesterday, there is still work to be done. That means a few road closures this weekend.
US 281 Southbound main lanes at Loop 1604 will be closed November 9-11, 2012 from 10 PM to 5 AM.
Loop 1604 Eastbound and Westbound main lanes from Gold Canyon to Redland will be closed nightly November 8-11, 2012 from 10 PM - 5 A.M.
Loop 1604 Eastbound exit ramp to Stone Oak will be closed November 3, 2012 at 3 A.M for two months.
Have a fun and safe weekend!
I'm sure you have all noticed the gaping hole in the wall that lines Stone Oak Parkway on the southbound side just past Huebner Rd. Stone Oak residents see a new hole in this wall about once a month, but why is this vicious cycle reoccurring? Head of Sonterra Management Company, Ray Jansure said that this particular incident happened a couple of weeks ago early in the morning.
According to the spokesperson at the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority, the Loop 1604 Eastbound exit ramp to Stone Oak will be closed starting November 3, 2012 at 3 A.M for two months. This exit ramp will be reconstructed to allow the auxiliary lane for the new East to South direct connector. All traffic will be detoured to use the Blanco exit ramp.
Around 11:45 this morning two cars collided in the 1600 block of Knights Cross near Evans Road. SAPD officer Gabriel Rosas responded to the incident and filled us in on what happened.
"Apparently one of the vehicles was traveling eastbound. One of the drivers said the other vehicle attempted to pass improperly. The second driver said she just lost control, hit a curb, sideswiping the other vehicle which caused it to spin out of control and the first vehicle to crash into the fence."

I spoke with Leah Plumas, the PAL sponsor at Johnson High School to see what their students did in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week.
Families around San Antonio are once again opening up their homes to Lackland Air Force Base airmen and trainees for Thanksgiving.
"Operation Home Cooking” kicked off their 37th year on October 29 and will remain open until every trainee has been spoken for. Many of these service members are away from their families for the first time and this program allows them to spend Thanksgiving with a local family. Last year, more than 4,500 service members were able to share in a traditional Thanksgiving feast and more than 5,000 are eligible again this year.
